Disadvantages of natural reeds
For centuries, African reed has been popular as a roofing material for a variety of building structures. People have been using African thatch products to build structures and to protect guests from the heat of the sun by providing thatch shelter. Additionally, African reed Cape thatch roofing products are known for covering gazebos, tiki huts, umbrellas, and various other exterior structures. However, there are many drawbacks to this beautiful thatching material, and the federal government in London has even banned the use of reed thatch since 1212.
Natural reed thatch is even more difficult to obtain due to potential fire hazards, fire risks, deterioration, pests, and even labor-intensive thatching work. Covering a roof with natural reed thatch is much more expensive compared to the cost of covering a roof with standard floor tiles.
However, natural African reed thatch is becoming less popular in the global market. This is not due to flame risk, deterioration and pest problems, but because thatch requires more resources than ever before. Firstly, the cost of natural reed thatch is rising every year due to increased demand and reduced supply. Many new thatched roofs are built each year. Secondly, due to the shortage of thatch specialists, the price of labor for roof thatch plants is increasing every year.
For this reason, we have created unique synthetic reed thatch panels that not only replicate the lovely look of African water reed; but, in addition, address these issues. Our pre-assembled thatch boards are suitable for DIY and are made from a mixture of browns, yellows and charcoal to mimic and replicate the authentic style of South African thatched roofs. All JHYBAMBOO African Cape Reed Thatch products come with a 20-year warranty covering any risk of UV deterioration for long term improvement of your interior or exterior space.
